Why Is Navy Day Celebrated On December 4?

Indian Navy Day is celebrated on December 4 to commemorate the success of Operation Trident during the India-Pakistan War of 1971.

What Is Operation Trident?

Operation Trident was a naval operation carried out by the Indian Navy during the Indo-Pak War of 1971 in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi. The naval offensive began on December 4, 1971, and included INS Vikrant, INS Nipat, INS Nirghat, and INS Veer - belonging to the 25th ‘Killer’ Missile Boat Squadron. In total, five navy missile boats attacked Pakistan’s Karachi port.

How India Celebrates Navy Day?

The celebration of the Navy Day involves many activities and ceremonies, so that everyone in the country and not just navy officials, can take part in it. It’s not just a day to mark the Naval Force’s courage and service; for kids, it’s an opportunity to learn about the day and our country’s history as well.

On the evening before Navy Day, there is often a special ceremony called a Beating Retreat, where the Navy band plays music, there are parades, and lights. In past years, these ceremonies happened at famous places like the Gateway of India in Mumbai. Ships, submarines, aircraft, and naval equipment are sometimes opened for school children to see, giving them a first-hand view of what Navy life means.

Following the beating retreat, there are a variety of shows, including maneuvers at sea, rescue operations, and sometimes rehearsals or mock demonstrations of how the Navy defends the country. All these celebrations are based on a theme that highlights the Navy’s current goals. For example, this year, the theme is ‘Combat Ready, Cohesive and Self-Reliant’, which promotes India’s indigenous defence systems in line with the Make In India programme.
