Several Indian families, across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, survived on pieces of information about their kids after they were informed that people who went for work are actually trapped somewhere across the border in Myanmar, in circumstances out of their control.
Their wait ended after four weeks when 27 Indian nationals returned to the country on Saturday after they were rescued from Myanmar. Their release came after episodes of diplomatic interventions.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, these people were trafficked to Myanmar through fake job opportunities and were brought to New Delhi on Saturday, and then travelled to their hometown to reunite with their families.
How Were Indians Rescued From Myanmar
Their repartition came after a formal appeal by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, who had written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar seeking urgent action for their release.
In a letter to the External Affairs Minister, Naidu detailed that Indian youth were lured by fake jobs in Thailand and other parts of the world and hired by agents only to be moved to areas like the Myanmar border and forced to work for scammers. According to representations received by his office, their passports were confiscated upon arrival.
The minister called upon the External Affairs Ministry to immediately engage all available diplomatic channels to ensure the swift rescue of the group, emphasising the serious threats to their safety and the anguish faced by their families in India.
Through the Indian Embassy in Yangon and in collaboration with relevant authorities, the individuals were successfully evacuated and brought back to India.
Officials noted that the operation demanded sustained coordination owing to the challenging security environment in certain regions of Myanmar, including areas outside full state authority.
Several families reached out to state authorities and elected representatives after they lost contact with their loved ones. The families said their sons had told them they did not know their exact location and feared reprisals if they resisted the work they were forced into.
According to a report by NDTV, quoting officials, focus will now shift to rehabilitation and further investigation into trafficking networks operating across borders.
