IndiGo Flight Disruption: The Centre is reportedly upset over the manner in which IndiGo’s recent operational breakdown left passengers stranded across the country. Officials say the airline’s alleged high-handedness, combined with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) delayed response, has raised serious concerns within the government.
The Jagran.com report cited Sources as stating that strict action is being planned against IndiGo, along with long-term measures to strengthen oversight of airlines. This may include tighter monitoring of operational practices and intervention when airlines impose arbitrary fares.
PM Directs Firm Action
According to officials, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed the Civil Aviation Ministry to take a firm approach in handling the matter. Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and senior ministry officials have already briefed the Prime Minister on the disruptions and the steps taken so far.
The Prime Minister stated that airlines must not compromise on passenger comfort or safety. Although the new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms have been put on hold temporarily, the government has made it clear that IndiGo must follow all regulatory requirements. A four-member committee is currently investigating the issue and major action is expected once its report is submitted.
Officials indicate that penalties, route restrictions or even a reduction in IndiGo’s flight operations could be considered. Discussions also include the possibility of seeking changes at the top management level, including the removal of IndiGo’s CEO.
Centre’s Priority: Restore Normal Operations
The government’s immediate focus, however, is to stabilise IndiGo’s flight schedule within the next two to three days. The airline has asked for at least a week to return to normal levels.
Future Rules And Fog-Related Measures
While officials note that regulating airfares completely may not be feasible due to global market conditions, new guidelines may be introduced to prevent airlines from taking undue advantage during high-demand periods. The government had capped fares during the COVID-19 pandemic and has done so again in this case.
The DGCA has also been asked to strengthen its monitoring system and prepare for the large-scale flight disruptions expected during the winter fog season.
