The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) will soon replace all diesel-run buses on its Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor with electric buses, making it the first-of-its-kind green transport corridor in the country, municipal commissioner Harshika Singh announced on Thursday.

The 11.45 kilometres-long BRTS route, which carries about 50,000 passengers daily, will have only electric buses in the near future, as per a policy decision taken by the Indore administration.

Municipal Commissioner Harshika Singh said IMC has already purchased 10 electric buses and plans to buy 40 more in the coming days. She said the move is aimed at reducing air pollution and promoting sustainable mobility in the city.

"We are going to make BRTS a first-of-its-kind green transport corridor in the country," she said. A policy decision in this regard has been taken, Singh said while not disclosing how long this transition would take, reported news agency PTI.

Currently, as many as 49 public transport buses ply daily on the BRTS stretch between Niranjanpur intersection and Rajiv Gandhi square, ferrying about 50,000 passengers. The new policy will help to boost connectivity sustainably, without any harm to the environment.
