Indore News: Seven Dead, Over 100 Fall Ill In Bhagirathpura After Sewage Enters Drinking Water Supply

Indore News: Indore, often cited as one of India’s cleanest cities, is facing a serious public health crisis after contaminated drinking water claimed seven lives in the Bhagirathpura area. The incident has raised sharp questions over civic negligence, as residents say complaints about unsafe water were ignored for days.

According to health officials, people in Bhagirathpura began falling ill with vomiting and diarrhoea from December 26. Despite the first death being reported that day, no immediate corrective action was taken. By December 29, the situation worsened, with over 100 residents rushing to hospitals with similar symptoms. Of them, 34 were admitted as their condition deteriorated.

Residents’ Complaints Ignored

Local residents alleged that they had repeatedly warned authorities about foul-smelling and dirty water, but no inspection was carried out in time. When health department teams conducted a door-to-door survey on Tuesday, they found that a large number of households were affected by gastrointestinal illness.

Cause Of Contamination Identified

A subsequent inspection by the municipal corporation revealed a major fault in the water supply system. Officials found that a public toilet had been constructed directly above the main drinking water pipeline supplying Bhagirathpura. Due to a rupture in the pipeline, sewage water reportedly mixed with the drinking water and reached homes.

Further checks also showed damage to water distribution lines at multiple locations in the locality, worsening the contamination.

Emergency Measures Taken

Following the findings, authorities immediately stopped the Narmada water supply to the area. Drinking water is now being supplied through tankers as a temporary measure. Officials said repair work is underway and health teams remain deployed to monitor the situation.

The health department has advised residents to avoid tap water until the system is fully disinfected and restored.
