PM Modi In Gandhinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday attacked the previous Congress governments while making shocking claims about the Indus Waters Treaty, signed between India and Pakistan in 1960. Without mentioning Congress, the prime minister said that the Indus Waters Treaty was badly negotiated and had provisions disallowing even the desilting of dams built on rivers in Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a gathering in Gujarat's Gandhinagar, PM Modi flagged the "shocking" provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty and alleged that the reservoirs that were supposed to be filled to 100 per cent capacity have now been reduced to only 2 per cent and 3 per cent.
"I want to tell the new generation how our country was ruined. If you study the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, you'll be shocked. It was decided that the dams built on the rivers of Jammu and Kashmir would not be cleaned. Desilting would not be done. The bottom gates for clearing sediments were to remain shut," the prime minister said.
"For 60 years, these gates were never opened. Reservoirs that were supposed to be filled to 100% capacity have now been reduced to only 2% or 3%," he added.

Hailing India's decision to put the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance till Pakistan continues to harbour terror organisations on its land, PM Modi said, "Right now, I haven't done anything and people are sweating there (Pakistan). We have opened small gates for cleaning the dams, and there is already a flood there."
India put the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance last month, following the ghastly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, where 26 people, including one local and 25 tourists, were gunned down by armed terrorists after allegedly asking about their religious identity. The treaty was suspended until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism.
India also categorically denied discussing any change in the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan during the DGMO-level talks regarding the ceasefire of all military confrontations between the two neighbouring nations following India's Operation Sindoor against Pakistan-based terror groups and their hideouts.
What Is Indus Waters Treaty?
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan under the mediation of the World Bank, remains a cornerstone of water-sharing diplomacy between the two nuclear-armed nations. The treaty allocates control of the three eastern rivers — Ravi, Beas and Sutlej — to India, while Pakistan retains rights over the western rivers — Indus, Jhelum and Chenab. Despite periods of heightened tensions between the two nations, the agreement has largely endured, even during armed conflicts of 1971 and 1999 Kargil War.
