Iran-Israel Conflict Disrupts Global Shipping, India Considers Relaxing Key Trade Rules | Details

In a major bid to prevent trade disruptions amid the Iran-Israel conflict, the government has been examining proposals to ease cabotage rules and container regulations. The proposals were discussed at a Shipping Ministry meeting with industry stakeholders.

The proposals are being proposed following the impacts of the West Asia crisis on the shipping activities. As per the officials, the crisis could affect container availability if the shipping delay persists.

Key Proposals Include:

• Ease Cabotage rules to allow more foreign-flagged vessels to carry cargo along India's coastal routes, and expand available shipping capacity if international shipping routes remain disrupted.
• Another proposal includes relaxing the current 180-day deadline for re-exporting EXIM containers.

According to a NDTV report, around 38,000 containers, including shipments carrying agricultural exports (3000 consignments of basmati rice and 1,000 containers of bananas and grapes), have been stranded.

The measures are aimed at increasing shipping capacity and addressing container shortages, as the conflict affects shipping routes and cargo movements.
