Iran's chief negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Sunday took a firm stance on the ongoing peace negotiations with the United States, saying there would be no deal between the two countries unless Tehran secures its rights.

In a video broadcast on the state television, Ghalibad said, "We will not approve any agreement until we are certain that the rights of the Iranian people have been upheld."

"There is no trust in the enemy's words and promises. Our only criterion is to achieve tangible results before we fulfil our commitments in return," he added after taking an oath as the re-elected speaker of parliament alongside its praesidium.

Calling the ongoing conflict a 'history-making war', Ghalibaf added, "We are pushing back the enemy in a great and history-making war. As the Leader of the Islamic Revolution emphasised, the most important factor in victory in this war is cohesion and unity."

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has reiterated that the US and Iran are close to a "very good deal," but added a warning that if Washington does not get what it wants, then "it will end it in a different way."

Ghalibaf's statement comes as Trump has reportedly sent a new framework for a peace deal to Iran. According to reports from The New York Times and Axios, Trump sent a new proposal on Saturday that Iran was to consider under "tougher" terms.

The two countries are currently engaged in a renewed diplomatic activity to discuss an end to the war through a permanent ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, despite reports of progress and Trump's 'claims' of a near peace deal, Iran has continued to remain cautious and emphasise that no final deal has been reached.
