Reacting to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the UN, said the war has led to an alarming humanitarian crisis as it has witnessed a large-scale loss of civilians’ lives, especially women and children.

Speaking at a UNSC meeting, Kamboj said India has been in constant touch with both the war-torn nations and a significant amount of humanitarian aid has been provided to Palestine. Besides, reiterated India’s stand that both the Middle Eastern nations should think of a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

“The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to a large-scale loss of civilian lives, especially women and children, and has resulted in an alarming humanitarian crisis. This is clearly unacceptable and we have strongly condemned the death of civilians,” Kamboj said at the UNSC General Assembly meeting.

Kamboj also noted that the major trigger point of the conflict in Gaza was the October 7 attack of Hamas in Israeli territory, adding that there could be no justification for terrorism and hostage-taking. “The major trigger was the terror attacks in Israel on October 7 which were shocking and deserve our unequivocal condemnation. India has a zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism. There can be no justification for terrorism and hostage-taking,” she said.

Kamboj also demanded there must be immediate and unconditional release of the Israeli hostages.

"The leadership of India is in constant touch with the leaders of the region, including those of Israel and Palestine. India has so far provided 70 tons of humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine. The message that India has conveyed since the start of this conflict is clear and consistent. It is important to prevent escalation, to ensure continued delivery of humanitarian aid, and to work towards an early restoration of peace and stability. A peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy is the only way forward," she added.

An unprecedented war erupted between Israel and Hamas when the latter on October 7 showered as many as 5,000 missiles unbridled in Israeli territory in a surprise attack. Israel claimed over 1,400 people died in the attack and some 250 were abducted by Hamas militants as they rampaged across Israeli cities. Responding to the misadventure, Israel launched a massive counteroffensive in Gaza and the major area of the Palestinian territory has been turned into rubble by Israeli attacks. As per Palestinian health officials, more than 20,000 people, the majority of them being women and children, have been killed so far since Israel launched a military operation in Gaza.
