Jadavpur University (JU) has started the process of installing 29 artificial intelligence-enabled CCTV cameras at 10 locations on its campus, following the ragging-related death of a first year student on August 10 in the university’s cameras. The cameras will cover the main entrance gate of the students’ hostel where the mishap took place, as well as the entrance and exit gates of the university and the administrative building.
The father of the deceased student welcomed the initiative but said that it was too late for his son. He said that his son had suffered mental harassment and ragging at the hostel, which had been a "den of several immoral activities". He hoped that no other parent would face the same tragedy and urged the varsity authorities to maintain the CCTV cameras properly.

“It is a proven fact now that the students’ hostel where the mishap took place had been a den of several immoral activities. Had the CCTV been installed there, the JU authorities would have been aware of the kind of mental harassment and ragging that fresher students like my son had to go through there. Probably I would not have lost my son had this initiative been taken before,’’ the father of the deceased student said as quoted by news agency IANS.

The Jadavpur University authorities said that they had faced resistance from a section of the students’ unions in the past to install CCTV cameras but this time there was not much opposition, probably because of the tragic incident. They said that the CCTV cameras would help in ensuring security and discipline on the campus.
