Six more people were arrested in West Bengal's Kolkata in connection to the death of a first-year student of Jadavpur University, the police said on Wednesday.

Three of the arrested were found to be former students of the institution who were taken into custody on Tuesday night during multiple operations conducted by teams of the city police, a senior official said.

A total of nine people were apprehended in the case. Allegedly the student fell from the second-floor balcony of the main hostel on the campus.

"We arrested them last night after they gave incoherent replies to our officers during questioning. It seems that they were actively involved in the death of the student. We will produce them in a court later in the day," a senior official told news agency PTI.

Earlier, the police had arrested three students of JU for alleged involvement in the ragging of the 18-year-old undergraduate student.

The students of the university have been sharing social media posts including photographs that suggested that there was an element of sexual harassment in the ragging of the deceased.

The police have taken cognizance of the posts and an investigation is underway into the matter.

The youngster was a native of Bagula in the state's Nadia district and was pursuing an undergraduate degree in Bengali (Honours).

The student fell from the balcony of the hostel last week and died while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
