Jagdeep Dhankhar-Jaya Bachchan Row:  United opposition is considering its options to remove Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar from his post amid its constrained ties with the Rajya Sabha chairman over his "blatantly and consistently partisan" approach, PTI reported quoting sources. The agency reported on Friday that INDIA bloc parties are considering submitting a notice for moving a resolution to remove the vice president from his office.

Notably, the Vice President, unlike the impeachment of the President, can be removed from his office by a resolution by the Rajya Sabha. If passed by a majority in the upper house and then the lower house, the VP stands removed.

"A resolution of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), passed by a majority of its members at that time and agreed to by the House of the People (Lok Sabha). A resolution for this purpose may be moved only after a notice of at least a minimum of 14 days has been given of such an intention," Article 63 of the Indian Constitution states.

Timing Not Decided

Though the resolution will not likely get the approval of the house majority, the opposition said that it would be a statement to highlight the Chair's "blatantly and consistently partisan" approach, the agency reported. The timing of the notice is yet to be discussed and decided, the agency further said quoting sources in the INDIA bloc.

According to opposition sources, 87 members have signed the proposal to initiate action against Dhankhar. A source mentioned that about two days ago, Leader of the House J P Nadda was informally notified that the opposition is contemplating submitting a motion to remove Dhankhar.

Opposition, Dhankar Spar Again

This comes as a war of words broke between the Rajya Sabha chairman and INDIA bloc parties in the house on Friday with the Congress party accusing him of working in a partisan manner against the opposition. Earlier today, opposition members walked out of the house after Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan and Dhankhar engaged in a verbal spat.
