Jagran Sahitya Srijan Samman: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Friday hailed Dainik Jagran group for defending the democracy during the 1975 Emergency, imposed by then PM Indira Gandhi, which was dubbed as the black chapter in India's democratic history. Heaping praises on Danik Jagran group, the home minister recalled his earlier days in politics and said that Daink Jagran newspaper played a key role in improving his command over Hindi.
Speaking at Jagran Sahitya Srijan Samman event in New Delhi, which has been organised in the memory of former Editor-In-Chief of Dainik Jagran, Narendra Mohan Gupta, Amit Shah said that when he entered national politics, he could only speak Gujarati.
"The Congress had trapped me in a case, and I had to stay at Gujarat Bhawan in Delhi. At that time, I had no work and very few people visited me. So, every day, I used to translate Dainik Jagran’s front page into Gujarati to improve my Hindi. The credit for my Hindi skills goes to Dainik Jagran," the home minister said.

Lauding Narendra Mohan Gupta for his fearless journalism during the Emergency, Shah called it a defining test for both Indian democracy and the media houses at that time. "When the Emergency was imposed, it was a test for our country’s democracy and journalism. Under Narendra Mohan ji’s leadership, Dainik Jagran fought against it, and he even had to go to jail for that," Shah said.
He further recalled that when Narendra Mohan Gupta became a Rajya Sabha MP, and said that Narendra Mohan ji upheld journalistic integrity and never restricted his reporters. "He told journalists, 'I only have the editorial page; the rest belongs to you. Write whatever you wish,'" Shah added.
