A 30-year-old man, Manoj Sharma, tried to kill himself and his family by mixing poison in halwa on Sunday in the Pratap Nagar area of Jaipur on Sunday.

Sharma’s wife Sakshi (28) and son Atharv (5 months), died after consuming the poisoned dessert. Sharma and his daughter Niya survived and are being treated at a hospital, Station House Officer (SHO) Zaheer Abbas said.

According to the police, Sharma was under a huge debt and was facing family problems. He lived with his family in a rented house in Pratap Nagar. 

In another incident of a family committing suicide over debt, four members of a family died in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal on July 13, this year. Police recovered a suicide note and a packet of sulphate pills from the incident spot. 

According to police, the husband and wife hanged themselves after poisoning their children aged 8 and 3, over a debt.  The deceased couple worked for a private insurance company and they had taken a loan, which they were unable to pay.
