Jammu and Kashmir Explosion: A major explosion occurred at the Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar after a large quantity of ammonium nitrate- earlier seized during a terror investigation exploded while officials were examining it. The blast took place when a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and police personnel were checking the seized material.
According to a NDTV report, the impact of the explosion caused extensive damage to the police station and several nearby buildings also suffered structural harm. Police said casualties are feared and those injured have been rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Senior police officials have reached the spot and the entire area has been sealed off as investigations continue.
The ammonium nitrate was linked to an ongoing probe that began when the Nowgam Station House Officer (SHO) uncovered posters of the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed placed across various locations. The posters hinted at a major attack in Kashmir and were traced to a network of radicalised, highly educated individuals.
In October, police identified one of the suspects, Dr Adeel Ahmad Rather, after reviewing CCTV footage from areas where the posters were displayed. Rather, who had worked at the Government Medical College in Anantnag before moving to Saharanpur, was arrested on October 27. An assault rifle was later recovered from his locker at the medical college.
During his questioning, Rather named Dr Muzammil Shakeel, a faculty member at Al-Falah Medical College in Haryana’s Faridabad. A raid on premises linked to Shakeel led to the recovery of nearly 3,000 kg of ammonium nitrate, exposing the scale of the operation. Shakeel’s arrest then led police to another doctor, Shaheen Saeed, who was also detained.
The network came under sharper focus after a car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort killed 13 people earlier this week. Hours later, investigators identified another doctor, Umar Nabi, as the person believed to be driving the vehicle in which the blast occurred.
Police say the investigation has revealed a “white-collar terror ecosystem,” involving radicalised professionals working under instructions from handlers abroad.
