Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw arranged special trains to assist passengers stranded at Jammu and Chandigarh airport following closures amid rising India-Pakistan tensions. He reviewed the current train operations and directed officials to run special trains based on public needs, officials said.

Earlier, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and relevant aviation bodies issued multiple Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), announcing the temporary suspension of civil flight operations at 32 airports across Northern and Western India.

Due to operational reasons, the NOTAM is effective from May 9, 2025, to May 14, 2025 (which corresponds to 0529 IST on May 15, 2025).

List of Airports Suspend Civil Flight Operations

The list of 32 airports include Adhampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon, Jaisalmer, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu Manali (Bhuntar), Leh, Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Srinagar, Thoise and Uttarlai.

After assessing the situation, the Railway Minister reviewed railway operations and instructed officials to coordinate with government agencies to run trains for people in border areas. In addition to regular services, he directed that special trains be operated based on public need.

As per the Railway Minister's instructions, four special trains were operated from Jammu and Udhampur on May 9, 2025. The first special train, numbered 04612, departed from Jammu station at 10:45 AM and included 12 unreserved coaches and 12 reserved class coaches.

The 20-coach Vande Bharat Express departed from Udhampur at 12:45 PM, traveling to New Delhi via Jammu and Pathankot. Additionally, a special train comprising 22 LHB coaches was operated from Jammu station at 7:00 PM.

Another Vande Bharat special train was operated at the request of the BCCI to facilitate travel for players and officials participating in the IPL. The train departed from Jammu at 3:30 PM and is scheduled to arrive at New Delhi in the evening. Additionally, an unreserved special train from Jammu to Guwahati via Uttar Pradesh and Bihar is planned to depart tonight at 11:55 PM.
