Jammu-Kashmir Weather Update: Cold waves have gripped Jammu-Kashmir with several areas witnessing power cuts. Despite smart metering and improved revenue collection, the crisis continues. Due to a shortage of electricity supply, rural areas of Jammu are experiencing scheduled and unscheduled power cuts for eight to ten hours, while cities face cuts for four to six hours.
The temperature in Kashmir is below freezing point, and the lack of electricity has made living more difficult. People are unable to use electronic devices to protect themselves from the cold due to scheduled and unscheduled power outage.
State Govt Making Efforts To Meet Electricity Demand
The Jammu and Kashmir government is also requesting additional electricity from the Ministry of Power to provide relief to the people. The situation has become so serious that you can gauge the severity from the fact that electricity consumption in the snowy regions has doubled.
Due to increasing power cuts in Jammu and Kashmir, many people are resorting to old methods to stay warm. In the valley, since the beginning of December, the use of Kangris, Hammams, and chimneys has increased significantly. Instead of relying on electricity, most people have started stockpiling dry wood, coal, and other fuels in their homes to protect themselves from the cold.

Demand Of Electricity In Jammu-Kashmir Reaches 3,500 Megawatts
In the freezing conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, the demand for electricity has reached 3,500 megawatts. To keep the electricity budget under control, the power corporation is forced to implement both scheduled and unscheduled power cuts. Currently, the electricity demand in Jammu has reached 1,700 megawatts, while the supply is only between 1,200 to 1,300 megawatts.
Over the past three days of Chilleh Kalan in the valley, electricity demand has risen to 2,200 megawatts, while the supply is between 1,600 and 1,700 megawatts, leaving a gap of 500 to 600 megawatts in the region.
To manage the electricity demand, JPDCL has appealed to the people of Jammu and Srinagar to minimise the use of electronic devices during peak demand hours, that is, in the morning and evening.
Jammu-Kashmir: Electricity Consumption Increased By Over 13%
According to the Power Corporation, electricity consumption in the state has increased by more than 13 percent in the past four years. According to the data, from 2020-21 to 2023-24, the per capita electricity consumption, which was 1322 kilowatt-hours, has now increased to 1507 kilowatt-hours.
One reason for this is the increase in population, which has risen from 13.41 million to approximately 13.70 million. During this period, the total number of electricity units purchased and consumed has also increased from 17,721.76 million to 20,644.47 million.
