Traffic movement on the 250-km-long Jammu–Srinagar National Highway was halted on Sunday night after a section of the road gave way near Ramban, according to a traffic department official told PTI.
The road collapse occurred around 10 pm at Maroog, causing hundreds of vehicles to become stuck on both sides, the official said.
He mentioned that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun repair work on the highway, which is the only all-weather route connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country.
“People are strongly advised to avoid travelling on the highway until the repair work is finished. A final decision on allowing fresh traffic will be made on Monday, depending on clearance from the NHAI,” the official added.
Baglihar Hydroelectric Project Shuts All Gates
Officials on Tuesday confirmed that all gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project dam, located on the Chenab River in Ramban, have been closed.
Previously, on May 8, two gates of the dam were opened to release water due to heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, which had raised concerns about potential flooding.
Following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, India has put the Indus Waters Treaty on hold. The move is part of a series of steps taken to send a strong message to Pakistan in response to its alleged backing of cross-border terrorism.
The Indus river system includes the main Indus River along with its tributaries—Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. The basin is primarily shared by India and Pakistan, with smaller portions extending into China and Afghanistan.
