Japan has initiated the issuance of e-Visas to tourists belonging to different countries including India, starting from April 1, 2024. The newly introduced system eliminates the need for physical visa stickers in passports. The initiative reportedly allows applicants to apply for visas electronically through VFS Global's designated Japan Visa Application Centres.
This single-entry visa is valid for up to 90 days and is specifically designed for travellers who plan to enter Japan by air holding an ordinary passport. People seeking short-term tourism in Japan can now obtain a visa more easily with the introduction of electronic visas (e-Visas) through the Japan e-Visa system.
Check Eligibility:
Both Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India are eligible to apply for the e-visa. The application process for e-visas remains centralised through VFS Global-managed Visa Application Centres, which streamlines the procedure.
Along with India, countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Cambodia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States are also eligible for the e-visas.

Notably, India is the largest source of tourism to Japan following the East Asian countries. Indian tourists visit Japan for sightseeing, religious tours and experiencing the country’s culture and beauty.
How To Apply For A Japan Tourist Visa?
Step 1: Visit the official website
To start the application process, individuals need to visit the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre managed by VFS Global at https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/. Those applying for visas are also required to submit the necessary documents.
Step 2: Application Form Entry
Those applying for the visa must click on ‘Temporary Visitor Visa’ to check all the visa requirements. After entering the information, individuals are required to download the application form, print it, and ensure that all fields are filled accurately.
Step 3: People are required to book an appointment to submit an application at the Visa Application Centre. After booking, individuals will receive an appointment confirmation email that includes the letter of appointment.
Step 4: During the appointment, present the completed visa application form at the Centre. Wait for the email notification, indicating when your decision is ready for collection. Now, track the visa application process online.
Step 5: During airport check-in, applicants are required to show the ‘visa issuance notice’ on their devices. The travel agency will provide a ‘Visa Issuance Notice’ that includes a two-dimensional barcode. Scan the barcode with your device and enter the required information to view the notice.
