The Union Home Minister on Thursday initiated debate on the Delhi Services Bill in the Lok Sabha and attacked Arvind Kejriwal's AAP, which rules Delhi and is opposing the ordinance. Shah accused Kejriwal of indulging in confrontation instead of governance. He said that the AAP government is trying to hide its misdeeds.
Amid the debate, former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru became the focal point of an interesting exchange between the Union Home Minister and Congress leader Ranjan Chowdhury.
Referring to the stand of leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, and Rajendra Prasad, among others, Shah said that they were also opposed to Delhi being given the status of a full state. As Shah named Nehru, Chowdhury got up to say he couldn't believe his ears that the Home Minister had praised Nehru and the Congress party.

"When we came to the House today, it felt good that our Amit Shah ji was repeatedly praising Nehru and the Congress party. I thought to myself, what am I seeing? Is this day or night? I thought I should run up to Shah and put a sweet in his mouth. Because praise for Nehru and the Congress from his mouth was a happy surprise for me," Chowdhury said.
Chowdhury was then interrupted by Amit Shah, who said that he had not praised Nehru but simply quoted what he had said. He also added that, if you want to consider this praise, I have no objection.
Retorting back, Adhir said as quoted by NDTV, "You take the support of Nehru whenever you need it. If you had done this all through, we wouldn't have had to see (the events in) Manipur and Haryana. This is Delhi and it is our dil (heart)."
The ordinance on the control of services in Delhi was promulgated in May, days after the Supreme Court verdict on the issue.
The Bill empowers the Central Government to make rules in connection with the affairs of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, including the functions, terms, and other conditions of service of officers and employees. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejirwal has been seeking the support of the opposition parties against the bill, especially in the Upper House of Parliament.
