Jharkhand Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert warning of heavy rainfall and flash floods in Jharkhand as the monsoon season continues to batter the region. Authorities have flagged 13 districts in the state for intense downpours, prompting concerns over flooding and related hazards. This alert has led to precautionary steps, including school closures, to safeguard residents.
The IMD has issued a ‘red’ alert for extremely heavy rain in Saraikela-Kharswan, East Singhbhum, and West Singhbhum districts. Meanwhile, an ‘orange’ alert signaling very heavy rainfall has been declared for Gumla, Khunti, and Simdega districts. Due to these warnings, all government, private, and minority schools up to class 12 in East Singhbhum have been closed. Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi has directed schools to conduct online classes to ensure students’ learning continues without interruption.

Speaking to PTI, Abhishek Anand, Deputy Director of the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, said, “A well marked low pressure area over Southeast Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh concentrated into a depression. It is likely to move west–northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal during next 24 hours.” The IMD’s flash flood alert covers Bokaro, East Singhbhum, Giridih, Gumla, Khunti, Latehar, Lohardaga, Palamu, Ramgarh, Ranchi, Saraikela, Simdega, and West Singhbhum until 5.30 pm on Tuesday.
The IMD bulletin warns, “Surface runoff and inundation may occur at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas.” Torrential rains are expected in Gumla, Simdega, Khunti, and West Singhbhum between Monday morning and Tuesday morning, triggering an ‘orange’ alert. Additional heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for Palamu, Latehar, Garhwa, and Hazaribag from Tuesday to Wednesday, and for Palamu, Chatra, Koderma, Hazaribag, and Giridih from Wednesday to Thursday.
A ‘yellow’ alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for six districts, including Ranchi, for Monday. Anand noted that the rainfall is being driven by a cyclonic circulation and trough system. Jharkhand has already recorded 61 percent more rain than normal since June 1, receiving 510 mm compared to the usual 316.7 mm, highlighting the intensity of this monsoon season.
