The Jammu and Kashmir Police deployed as many as 960 specially trained policemen in the border areas of the Union Territory to combat infiltration and cross-border terrorism in the region. The deployment comes amid a recent spike in infiltration by heavily armed terrorists, reportedly from Pakistan.
Over half of these police personnel have been positioned in the Jammu division's border areas, with about 400 deployed in the Kashmir Valley. Notably, this marks the first time the Jammu and Kashmir Police have assembled a force dedicated solely to anti-infiltration and anti-terrorism duties. The deployment is drawing comparisons to US Marines, which is an elite military unit of the United States Armed Forces responsible for conducting expeditionary operations through combined arms and special operations forces.
Jammu and Kashmir's Director General of Police, R R Swain, highlighted that the 960 jawans, who graduated from the Jammu and Kashmir Police Training School, were recruited based on their origins from border areas on Wednesday, reported Indian Express.
The deployment of these specially trained locals aims to bolster human intelligence in border areas. Their local roots are expected to facilitate the detection of unusual movements, thereby aiding police and security forces in intercepting infiltrating terrorists near the border.
These personnel will exclusively focus on anti-infiltration and anti-terrorism operations, with strict prohibitions against their deployment as personal security officers or for other office duties. "They will not be deployed as PSOs or in the office or for any other extra work," Swain said, adding, "There are strict restrictions on them."

Supervisory officers have also been instructed to ensure that these personnel remain focused on their designated tasks to enhance area security and prevent enemy infiltration, the report said citing senior officials of Jammu and Kashmir police.
