The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration on Tuesday initiated action against students for raising objectionable and provocative slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah outside Sabarmati Hostel inside the university premises. The administration termed the sloganeering "intentional and conscious misconduct" and not any spontaneous or inadvertent expression. 

Left-wing student groups raised slogans against PM Modi and Amit Shah inside the campus following the Supreme Court’s decision to deny bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 riots conspiracy case. The slogans were raised during a gathering at the “Guerilla Dhaba” on the university premises on Monday evening.

The Chief Security Officer of JNU wrote to the Vasant Kunj Police Station SHO requesting registration of an FIR in the matter.

"The raising of such slogans is wholly inconsistent with democratic dissent, violate the JNU Code of Conduct, and have the potential to seriously disturb public order, campus harmony, and the safety and security environment of the University. The slogans raised were clearly audible, deliberate, and repeated, thereby indicating intentional and conscious misconduct rather than any spontaneous or inadvertent expression. The Chief Security Officer also submitted a detailed report to the JNU Chief Proctor, stating that a small student gathering initially escalated into a provocative incident following the top court’s verdict on Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, with objectionable slogans being raised that were described as contempt of the Supreme Court.

"The number of students present at the spot was approximately 30-35. The prominent students identified during the programme included Aditi Mishra, Gopika Babu, Sunil Yadav, Danish Ali, Saad Azmi, Mehboob Ilahi, Kanishk, Pakeeza Khan, Shubham, and others. However, during the course of the program, subsequent to the judicial verdict on the bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, the nature and tone of the gathering changed significantly. Certain students began raising highly objectionable, provocative, and inflammatory slogans. It is a direct contempt of the Honourable Supreme Court of India," the report reads.jnuu

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla alleged that slogans including “Modi Shah ki kabr khudegi” were raised following the denial of bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. He claimed the protest reflected what he described as the “tukde ecosystem” and termed the participants “urban Naxals” and “anti-India.”

BJP leader Pradeep Bhandari supported the allegation, stating that the late-night gathering outside Sabarmati Hostel was not a legitimate protest but an attempt to promote what he called “anti-India thought.” He further alleged that academic spaces were being misused to legitimise extremist narratives.
