Jagat Prakash Nadda, BJP Chief and Union Health Minister has been named Leader of House in Rajya Sabha on Monday by the BJP. He will replace Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who has been elected to the lower house from North Mumbai seat. JP Nadda was elected to the Rajya Sabha earlier in February this year along with 41 latest entrants in the Upper House. Bharatiya Janata Party nominated three more members - Ashwini Vaishnaw, L Murugan and party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi - for a consecutive second term to the house.
Currently, in the 245-member house, NDA led by BJP has a strength of 114, whereas, opposition with Congress at the forefront boasts of 117 members. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is the leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha.
This would be another responsibility on Nadda's shoulders as he was already working as Union Health Minister and the president of the BJP. The 63-year-old BJP leader has recently led the party to its third consecutive electoral win in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
In Modi 3.0, a total of 11 Rajya Sabha members are serving as ministers. These include Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Hardeep Singh Puri.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh congratulated the BJP leader on his new role and urged him to accommodate the views of the opposition in the House.
"Greetings to J P Nadda ji on his being nominated as the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. As Venkaiah Naidu Garu might have said -- if the Leader of the House can accommodate, the Opposition can cooperate," he posted on X.
