In a major disciplinary action, Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar has suspended Kalighat Police Station OC (Station House Officer) Goutam Das with immediate effect. Sharing a photo of himself sitting on a chair in uniform with a sophisticated automatic weapon on the internet proved costly for Das. He has now been replaced by Chameli Mukherjee, who has been assigned to the Kalighat police station.
Photo Captioned 'Ready For New Responsibility'
Recently, Goutam Das had shared a photo on Facebook and WhatsApp status, in which he was seen sitting on his official chair wearing a police uniform and holding a deadly sophisticated gun in his hand.
He captioned the photo, "Ready for new responsibility." On Friday night, the Trinamool Congress complained to the Election Commission and the Kolkata Police Commissioner, calling the photo "highly objectionable" and "threatening".
Violation Of Rules And Trinamool's Attack
Trinamool Congress state vice-president Jayprakash Majumdar attacked the issue and said that displaying weapons on internet media by a police officer in uniform is a blatant violation of the guidelines of Kolkata Police and the Internet media policy of the Government of India.
They questioned whether the OC of an important police station like Kalighat was allotted such a lethal weapon or was it merely a "show of power". According to the Trinamool, such images are derogatory to the dignity of a law and order protector and send a message of targeting.

Command Changed For Second Time During Election
During this election season, the Kalighat police station is undergoing a series of reshuffles. Earlier, on March 29, the Election Commission removed the then-OC, Utpal Ghosh, and appointed Goutam Das from the Special Branch. However, within a month of his appointment, Das became embroiled in controversy and has now been suspended.
Sources at Lalbazar confirmed that the suspension was due to the seriousness of the "gun incident" and the internet media posts. The police department has launched an internal investigation into the matter.
