Kangana Ranaut, actor-turned-politician and BJP MP, on Tuesday, said that the centre should bring back the three repealed farm laws, inviting backlash from opposition parties days ahead of the Haryana assembly polls. The Lok Sabha MP from Himachal's Mandi called farmers 'pillar of strength in India’s progress' and said that they should demand the three farmers' laws for their prosperity.
“Farm laws should be brought back. I think this can become controversial. They are in the farmers’ interest. Farmers should demand (to bring farm laws back) so that they can prosper…. Farmers are a pillar of strength in India’s progress. Only some states objected to farm laws. I urge that farm laws should be brought back in the interest of farmers,” Ranaut was heard saying in a video shared by Congress on X.
"The 3 black laws imposed on farmers should be withdrawn. More than 750 farmers in the country were martyred, only then did the Modi government wake up and these black laws were withdrawn. Now BJP MPs are planning to bring back these laws again. Congress is with the farmers. These black laws will never be repealed now, no matter how hard Narendra Modi and his MPs try," the party captioned the video.
In 2020, farmers from Haryana and Punjab launched large-scale protests against the controversial farm laws passed by Parliament, camping at Delhi’s borders for over a year. Despite the prolonged standoff, the government eventually repealed the laws as the farmers remained steadfast in their demands, refusing to compromise.
Kangana Ranaut's statement came just a month after the BJP reprimanded her for earlier statements on the farmers' protest.
“Bangladesh-like anarchy could have happened in India also like in the name of Farmers protest. Outside forces are planning to destroy us with the help of insiders. If it hadn’t been the foresight of our leadership they would have succeeded,” Kangana Ranaut was heard saying in a video shared on microblogging site X.
Oppn Hits Back
Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, urged the BJP to take swift action against the actor if the party does not endorse her statement.
“Using Kangana as a proxy to attack farmers is a calculated move. The BJP must clarify its stance on the farmers and the farm laws. Rather than pushing for these destructive laws, Kangana should step away from politics and focus on reviving her fading Bollywood career,” the Congress leader wrote on X.
