Work has now officially begun on the much-awaited Rapid Rail corridor between Kanpur and Ayodhya that will cut down the journey time between the two cities to almost 90 minutes.

The 187 km long corridor will be built under the proposed SCR (State Capital Region) transport network of UP with a total projected cost close to Rs 32,000 crore. The detailed presentation of the project was discussed at a joint meeting between NCRTC and the state government on 14 May, and the project details were subsequently released by UP SCRTC.

The planned Rapid Rail (also named as Namo Bharat Corridor) intends to provide rapid high-speed connectivity to various urban centres, including Kanpur, Unnao, Lucknow and Ayodhya, benefiting the daily commuters, students, working professionals, and tourists.

There would be roughly 12 stations along the proposed corridor, including:

  • Nayaganj
  • Unnao
  • Bashirpur
  • Nawabganj
  • Banthra
  • Amausi
  • Sushant Golf City
  • Jugpur, Barail
  • Safdarganj
  • Bhitriya
  • Ayodhya

The corridor will be developed in two phases - phase 1 of the Rapid Rail will be from Nayaganj (Kanpur) to Amausi (Lucknow), and phase 2 will be from Amausi (Lucknow) to Ayodhya via Lucknow city and Barabanki.

Trains along this corridor are planned to operate at speeds up to 160 kmph, making it one of the fastest regional transport networks in the state.

Additionally, there are plans for dedicated economic and commercial development zones along prominent stations along the corridor.

Key Developments Planned:

  • Nawabganj is planned as an eco-tourism hub on account of its proximity to the zoo.
  • Banthra will be developed as an industrial corridor.
  • Amausi is planned to be developed as a futuristic Aero hub that will link up with the Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport.
  • Unnao and Bhitariya will emerge as the logistics and transport hubs of the state. Ayodhya is positioned as a global tourist and spiritual hub.

Like Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan, Lucknow will also serve as a regional interchange hub connecting passengers from across other areas within the SCR transport network to other routes.
