Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, under fire from the opposition BJP over the alleged rape of a woman at KR Market in Bengaluru last week, made a contentious remark by asking if no sexual assault cases had been reported when the BJP government was in power.
His response came after the BJP demanded the resignation of his Home Minister, G Parameshwara, over a series of incidents involving sexual assault and crimes against women. This included the horrific murder of a six-year-old girl in the Hoysala Nagar neighbourhood of the state capital just the previous week.
“Were there no rapes in BJP's tenure? Rape shouldn't happen, yes. Women should be protected, yes, But in society, there are always bad elements... we will act strongly against them," Siddaramaiah said.
"Anti-social elements in the society do such things. We will take stringent action against them," the Chief Minister added.
Bengaluru Rape Case
The incident took place on Sunday night, January 19, and two individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the case. The victim was reportedly waiting for a bus to Yelahanka. When she asked about the bus, they took her to Godown Street and allegedly raped her.
“The incident happened in SJ Park. The complaint pertains to extortion and sexual assault. Two people have been arrested,” Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda told reporters.
BJP Reacts
The BJP has called for the resignation of Home Minister G Parameshwara, alleging a significant rise in crimes such as robbery, murder, rape, and violence against vulnerable groups in society.
“Law and order in the state has collapsed to the bottom. The common people are living in fear. There is no environment where girls can move around safely. How long will you continue to run such a bad government by clinging to your chair? Resign from your position and free the people of the state from this misrule and anarchy.” Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R Ashoka said in a post on X.
