A Karnataka High Court judge rebuked woman after she sought Rs 6 lakh maintenance from her husband after parting ways with the latter. The lawyer representing the woman said the latter needs Rs 15,000 per month for shoes, dresses, bangles etc and Rs 60,000 per month for food. Besides, she also expressed that she would require an additional Rs 4-5 lakh for her medical expanses.
Asserting that the demands were exploitation of the process of the court, the judge said the woman should rather earn if she wishes to spend so much.

“Please don’t tell that the court that it is all a person requires. Rs 6,16,300 per month. Does anybody spend this much? A single lady for herself. If she wants to spend, let her earn. Not on the husband. You don’t have any other responsibility of the family. You don’t have to take care of the children. You want it for yourself… You should be reasonable,” the judge said.
A video clip of the hearing has also been making the rounds across social media platforms. A social media account-- National Commission For Men Affairs-- shared the video and hailed the female judge for her ‘sensible’ judgment.
The court also warned that the woman’s plea would stand rejected if she does not to demand a reasonable amount. The hearing in this regard took place on August 20.
Notably, the woman, Radha Munukuntla, was granted permission to seek compensation of Rs 50,000 by a family court in Bengaluru. However, she moved the high court seeking more amount.
The Supreme Court has emphasised that the award of maintenance or permanent alimony should not serve as a penalty, but rather be aimed at ensuring a decent standard of living for a wife in case of separation or divorce.
