In a shocking incident, the son of late underworld don and the founder of pro-Kannada organisation, N Muthappa Rai, was allegedly shot at by unidentified assailants near his residence in Bidadi in Ramanagara district, police said on Saturday.
The victim, identified as Ricky Rai, was rushed to Bengaluru's Manipal Hospital for further treatment, they said.
The incident took place at around 1 am to 1:30 am (late Friday night) near his residence when he was travelling from Bidadi to Bengaluru in his car.
As per the police, some unidentified people allegedly opened fire when a bullet struck the vehicle. He was in the rear seat along with his gunman. The bullet pierced through the driver's seat, injuring both the driver and Rai.
After getting the information, the police reached the site and cordoned off the area. The officials added that a case has been registered and efforts are underway to nab the suspects.

What did Ramanagara SP say?
Ramanagara Superintendent of Police (SP) Srinivas Gowda said, "Rai was shot near his residence in Bidadi, a town in Karnataka. The incident took place around 1:30 am on Saturday. He has been referred to Bengaluru for treatment."
Who was gangster Muthappa Rai?
Muthappa Rai started his career as a local bank employee but was eventually drawn into crime after he started a cabaret joint on Brigade Road in Bengaluru. As per the Deccan Herald's report, Muthappa resorted to violence to protect his bar from local goons, which further entrenched him in the crime world.
It was in 1989 that he emerged as a known gangster after he and his aides killed rival gangster MP Jayaraj. On May 15, 2020, he died of brain cancer.
