Congress MLA Shivaganga Basavaraj maintained his stance, asserting that his comments were solely about the officer's duty commitment, not her pregnancy. Despite mounting backlash, he refused to retract his words, saying that he didn't use abusive language and only suggested she take maternity leave if she couldn't come to work.
Speaking to a news media outlet, New18, Basavaraj said, “Yes, it’s true I said it, and I will not take back my words. Maternity is leave with salary. I asked her to go on leave if she can’t come on duty. That’s all I questioned her about," he said. “Did I use bad language or speak otherwise? I asked just three things — you are able to collect your salary, if you can’t come on duty, then go on maternity leave. What’s wrong in what I asked?"
Why MLA Made The Remark
During a Karnataka Development Programme meeting in Channagiri, Range Forest Officer Shweta's absence sparked controversy. Congress MLA Basavaraj questioned her work commitment, suggesting she take leave if she couldn't attend meetings, unaware of her pregnancy. This incident triggered a heated debate about his comments. “If she was unwell or had health issues, nothing stopped her from excusing herself by telling me. She did not do that," Basavaraj said.#Karnataka: #Congress MLA Shivaganga Basavaraj sparked outrage on Wednesday after making sexist remarks against a woman forest officer who was absent from a Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting due to pregnancy.

But if an officer goes on leave, another should take charge and ensure public work continues. If she is not ready to come on duty and expects to get a salary, questioning that — is that wrong? All I meant was, if you cannot do your duty, take leave and go. Did I use abusive language?"
