The Karnataka government is set to prohibit the use of all types of plastic in temples run by the state’s Religious Endowment (Muzrai) Department, starting from August 15, said Revenue Minister and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy in an official announcement. 

The move is intended to improve cleanliness and environmental responsibility in religious spaces and applies to all the temples under the jurisdiction of the Muzrai Department.

Ramalinga Reddy, in an X post, confirmed the enforcement of the new measure in order to promote cleanliness. 

Temple authorities have been urged to take the new guidelines seriously. Provisions for action against those caught using plastic in temple premises have been put in place in terms of fines, and in severe cases, criminal cases may be filed against individuals. 

On the other hand, the capital city of Karnataka will observe Dry Day on August 15, as the day marks the Dry Day. There will be restrictions on the sale of liquor or alcoholic beverages in the city for 48 hours straight, starting from Friday and extending to Saturday, as August 16 marks Janmashtami, leading to a ban on alcohol sales.

Authorities are implementing precautionary measures to maintain law and order during national and religious celebrations, expecting large public gatherings across the city. To prevent untoward incidents, officials are increasing control and enforcing restrictions.
