A social welfare officer reportedly died by suicide in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district on Friday. The deceased, named Mallikarjun, had left behind a video alleging harassment by a senior officer. The official being accused, Krishnappa, district director of the social welfare department, denied all allegations made against him. 

Mallikarjun served as an assistant director in the department and was found hanging from his office in the Appa Bande area of Pavagada. According to Mallikarjun’s video sent to colleagues before his suicide, he felt harassment from Krishnappa led him to take such drastic measures, stating also a concern for his family as they had taken care of him, and he could not continue to support them as he wished.

"My mother, my wife, my children - my entire family has looked after me very well. They have given me respect. But I had to help them. I wanted to help them more, and I am unable to do that," NDTV quoted Mallikarjun’s video.

"Because of harassment by Krishnappa from the social welfare department, I have to take this step. God will punish him. Since his family is not at fault, my family members need not take revenge on them. God and the law will definitely punish him," he added.

Krishnappa also recorded a video denying his wrongdoings. In Krishnappa's video, he explains that he issued a notice to Mallikarjun regarding an alleged complaint of misconduct from the head office in Bengaluru, but that an investigation was not started and will be conducted at some point in the future.

Furthermore, Krishnappa confirmed that Mallikarjun was only ten days away from his retirement and therefore that his pension was 100 per cent secure; there was no possibility that it would be denied due to the fact that Krishnappa was supporting and verifying his pension application.

Describing the death as 'suspicious', Krishnappa has asked the authorities to find out what happened. Pavagada police have formally initiated an investigation into this case.
