Karnataka Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for multiple regions in Karnataka, including Bengaluru, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds from May 12 to May 15. Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka are all expected to experience unstable weather conditions during this period.

According to the IMD’s forecast, strong winds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h, with gusts up to 50 km/h, are likely across the affected areas. The weather may lead to intense thunderstorms and continuous rain, especially on Wednesday and Thursday, raising concerns about waterlogging and localised flooding in low-lying zones.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has also confirmed the possibility of widespread rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in various districts, including the capital city Bengaluru.

In Bengaluru, skies will mostly stay partly cloudy. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected every day until May 15, mainly in the late afternoons and evenings. Gusty winds may also occur during these hours and people are advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines.

The changing weather pattern is linked to larger developments in the region. The IMD has announced that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to begin over the South Andaman Sea and parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 13. Within a few days, it may extend to the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin region, and central Bay of Bengal, further influencing weather across southern India.

Apart from Karnataka, several other southern states and union territories are expected to receive scattered moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. These include Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and Lakshadweep—where lightning is likely on May 12.

Coastal Karnataka remains on high alert for continued thunderstorm activity until May 15. Residents across the state have been advised to remain cautious as weather conditions may shift suddenly.
