Karnataka Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in parts of Karnataka, particularly Coastal Karnataka, following the earliest onset of southwest monsoon in the state. For the first time in more than one and a half decades, the southwest monsoon officially entered Karnataka on Saturday, nearly 10 days ahead of schedule, which is normally the first week of June.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Southwest monsoon entered some parts of Karnataka on the same day as Kerala. On Sunday, the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) was passing through Belagavi, Haveri, and Mandya in Karnataka. The monsoon is expected to cover Bengaluru in the next few days.
Karnataka Weather Forecast: Red Alert In Coastal, Districts Of South Interior Karnataka
The weather department has issued a red alert in all three districts of Coastal Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada, for extremely heavy rainfall covering a widespread area of more than 75 per cent. As per the forecast, the red alert will remain in place till May 27 and will be replaced by an orange alert till the end of May for heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Three districts of South Interior Karnataka have also been placed under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall at many places, covering 50 to 75 per cent of the area. Districts that have been placed under red alert are Chikkamagalur, Kodagu, and Shivamogga. The red alert in Chikkamagalur, Kodagu, is expected to remain in place till May 27, and an orange alert will be placed in these two districts after May 27 till May 31. In Shivamogga, the red alert has been imposed till May 26 and an orange alert till May 31, with the exception of a yellow alert on May 27.
No Major alerts have been issued for North Interior Karnataka, only an orange alert in Belagavi and Dharwad for May 26 and 27.
Heavy rainfall continued to lash coastal Karnataka and the districts of South Interior Karnataka on Sunday. Some parts of coastal districts received very heavy rainfall in excess of 100 mm
