Karur Stampede: The Madras High Court on Friday formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of IG (North) Asra Garg to probe South superstar Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally that killed 41 persons and injured over 60 on September 27 in Tamil Nadu’s Karur. The Karur police have been directed to hand over all related documents to the SIT immediately.

The high court also dismissed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Uma Anandan's plea for a CBI probe into the stampede. Anandan had moved the court saying there were many questions, including possible official apathy behind the fatal incident.

A division bench, while rejecting the plea, asked the petitioner to approach the Madurai bench of the HC, the jurisdictional court.

Earlier, Vijay, in a video message, stated that he was completely shattered after the stampede. He further stated that he did not visit the affected site again to ensure that a similar situation was not repeated.

Vijay added that the state government framed his close friends and senior party members even though they did nothing wrong after the stampede. The TVK chief further suggested the Chief Minister MK Stalin take action against him if he sought "revenge".

“I have not faced a painful situation like this in my life. My heart aches. Only pain in my heart. People came to see me in the campaign. I am always grateful to the love and affection people have on me. In order to ensure there should be no compromise on safety of people, I kept politics aside and chose a place that was safe for the people and requested the police department. But what should not have happened, happened,” Vijay stated in his video message.
