A 250-year-old bridge is undergoing major transformation and is set to reopen soon in a new avatar as construction nears completion. The new wooden bridge will only be open for pedestrians, while the adjacent Amira Kadal bridge will serve vehicular traffic. The Rs 7.17-crore project includes retrofitting of the piers and carrying out all allied works.
As part of the ambitious Srinagar Smart City initiative, the bridge promises to enhance urban mobility, ease pedestrian movement, and elevate the aesthetic appeal of the city’s main commercial hub. The idea behind it was to blend modern architecture with its traditional wooden charm.
Originally built in 1774 by Amir Khan Jawan Sher, the Afghan governor of Kashmir under the Durrani Empire, the bridge is now undergoing major renovation. The footbridge is being constructed by Srinagar Smart City Limited. Recent updates indicate significant progress, despite earlier delays caused by logistical challenges, including the relocation of local shops, Kashmir Ahead reported in March.
With 60% of construction completed by mid-March 2025, officials are confident about meeting the revised deadline and expect to open the project by mid-year. The Amira Kadal footbridge will ease pedestrian congestion in Lal Chowk, a key commercial and cultural hub in Srinagar, and enhance the city's skyline with its modern design.
The project faced hurdles, notably the coordination of shop relocations with the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. Joint efforts with affected shopkeepers have been underway to secure alternative spaces, ensuring minimal disruption.
