Mumbai- Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway: The last segment of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, covering 76 kilometres from Igatpuri to Amane, is expected to be inaugurated on May 1, coinciding with the state's foundation day. This event will also see the south-bound carriageway of the Thane creek bridge open to the public.
The Hindustan Times report cited Anil Gaikwad, managing director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), as confirming that both projects are ready for their official launch. The completion of these projects is anticipated to significantly enhance connectivity to Navi Mumbai, Pune and the soon-to-open Navi Mumbai international airport.
The expressway was initiated under the vision of former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. The first phase, linking Nagpur and Shirdi, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2022. The second phase reached completion in May 2023, with the inauguration by former chief minister Eknath Shinde. The third phase, from Bharvir to Igatpuri, followed in March 2024.
It is expected that Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate this final stretch during his visit to Mumbai for the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit at the Bandra Kurla Complex.
In seperate news, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a 6-lane, access-controlled Greenfield High-Speed National Highway from JNPA Port (Pagote) to Chowk, covering 29.219 km in Maharashtra. The project, to be executed under the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) model, will cost Rs 4,500.62 crore. This initiative aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, aiming to enhance connectivity to key ports. With growing traffic at JNPA Port and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, the highway will help reduce congestion in Panvel and nearby areas, easing travel to NH-48 and Mumbai–Pune Expressway.
