Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday tore into the DMK over the Katchatheevu issue after raising a vehement campaign against the Congress for giving away the island to Sri Lanka in 1974.

In a post on X, PM Modi said DMK was ‘unmasked’ over the issue and they did nothing for the interest of Tamil Nadu. He also rebuked the DMK and the Congress for promoting their families. “Rhetoric aside, DMK has done NOTHING to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s interests. New details emerging on #Katchatheevu have UNMASKED the DMK’s double standards totally. Congress and DMK are family units. They only care that their own sons and daughters rise. They don’t care for anyone else. Their callousness on Katchatheevu has harmed the interests of our poor fishermen and fisherwomen in particular,” he posted on X.

Besides PM Modi, the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a press conference over the Katchatheevu issue. He said the Tamil Nadu government claims they were not consulted but they were fully informed that Congress was going to hand over Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka.

Taking a swipe at the Congress and the DMK, Jaishankar alleged the issue was raised in the Parliament by the parties who actually did it. He said the government will now have to work it out with the Sri Lankan government.

While responding to a question, Jaishankar said Indira Gandhi called Katchatheevu Island a ‘Little rock that doesn’t matter’. He also said India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to give away the island to Sri Lanka.

Reacting over PM Modi's tweet and EAM S Jaishankar's press conference on the Katchatheevu issue, Congress leader Manickam Tagore said BJP, RSS and PM Modi were involved in diversionary tactic. "The problem with BJP, RSS and PM Modi is that people are rejecting them in Tamil Nadu and they want a diversionary tactic,” he said.

The BJP has launched a fervid campaign against the Congress over the Katchatheevu issue. PM Modi on Sunday alleged the Congress ‘callously’ gave away Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka. He said the country was still paying the price of the ‘anti-national’ act of the Congress.
