Kerala would be observing a statewide strike on Tuesday, demanding the arrest of those responsible for the death of a first-year BDS student. The strike is called by the Nitish Raj Action Council along with Dalit and Adivasi organisations.
The statewide strike would be observed between 6 am and 6 pm. Nearly 52 organisations are leading the protest. The strike comes as a response to the tragic death of Nithin Raj at Kannur Medical College, Anjarakeddy.
The action council claimed that essential services would be exempted and vehicles would not be stopped forcibly. The council urged the public to cooperate with the strike.
What Are Their Demands?
The organisations have put forward a series of demands; one is the implementation of the Rohit Vemula Act. The second is a compensation of Rs 10 crore to Raj's family. Thirdly, they demanded a revocation of the affiliation of Anjarakandy Dental College. The fourth and the last demand was to judicially monitor the investigation of the case.
Daily life is likely to remain largely unaffected in parts of the state. Rajkumar Karuvarath, Kannur district general secretary of the Bus Association, asserted that private bus services in the district would operate as usual, Manorama reported.
The Vyapari Vuasvasayi Ekopana Samithi also declared that all shops would remain opened.
How Did The Matter Escalate?
The 22-year-old student, Nithin Raj from Thiruvananthapuram, was allegedly harassed over his caste and complexion by the college faculty members.
The Thalassery sessions court on Saturday granted bail to the second accused Dr Sangeetha Nambiar, and denied Dr M Kodanda Ram's plea in the case. The court, which blamed "media trial" in the case, did not find any evidence to charge Dr Ram under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act).
