Kerala Hijab Controversy: A church-run school in Kerala’s Ernakulam district is making headlines after a class 8 student was barred from attending classes because she wore a hijab. St. Rita's School in Palluruthy, Kochi said hijab violated the school’s 'dress code'.

"This school is not allowing me to wear a hijab. They made me stand at the entrance (of the classroom) and told me to remove it. Teachers were rude. I won't study here," the girl said, as quoted by a NDTV report.

St. Rita's School Declares Holiday

St. Rita's School management stated that it received threats demanding that hijabs be permitted. The school planned closures for Monday and Tuesday to ensure safety of students.

St. Rita's School Justifies Move

Justifying the move, St. Rita's School said the student failed to adhere to the prescribed uniform. According to the principal, other students would also defy rules if even one student does not follow the dress code.

According to the school, the student had attended classes without a hijab for the past four months.

She resumed wearing it last Tuesday. The authorities alleged that the student's decision was influenced by external parties attempting to create conflict within the school.

The row continues to spark debate over religious freedom, school discipline, and student safety, as officials, parents, and community leaders work toward a resolution that satisfies everyone involved.
