On tracing call records and bank details, it was revealed that a 26-year-old man from Kolhapur used his talent of mimicking female voices and was acting as a seductress.
The man has been identified as Mohan Jyotiba Pawar. He had recently completed his BSc and was unemployed for the past six months.
Pawar, who belonged to a farmer’s family had also once visited the BJP MLA’s office asking for a job. He was however turned away. Unable to manage an income, the unemployed man planned the sextortion.
While questioning, the man confessed to the crime. The man has been booked under section 308(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for extortion and section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and remanded to police custody till October 15, as per a Hindustan Times report.
The MLA was targeted purely for financial reasons, and there is no evidence yet of any actual obscene material, said senior police inspector Sunil Warode, as per the report.
