The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will field senior Supreme Court lawyer Haris Beeran as IUML Rajya Sabha candidate from Kerala. IUML supremo Sadiq Ali Shihab announced the decision, while stating that the name was finalised after detailed talks within the party. Three Rajya Sabha seats are vacant in the state, which will be contested on June 25.
Harish Beeran stated that it is a huge responsibility for him to be chosen as the candidate of IUML. Beeran, currently based in Delhi, emphasised his commitment to upholding the Constitution and mentioned the ongoing legal battle against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), represented by senior lawyer Kapil Sibal.
"Since I am based in Delhi, I feel this big responsibility has come at a time when the country is passing through difficult times with even the Constitution coming under duress. We will be doing our best to see that the Constitution remains intact," the SC lawyer said.

Haris Beeran, who has been a pivotal legal figure for the IUML in the Supreme Court, is set to take on the mantle of Rajya Sabha MP. The announcement comes ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 25, 2024, which will see the retirement of three Kerala MPs, Binoy Viswam, Elamaram Kareem and Jose K Mani, on July 1, 2024.
The IUML, the second biggest ally in the Congress-led UDF in Kerala, has 15 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly and won 2 Lok Sabha seats in the recently contested 2024 General Elections in the state. These numbers give IUML high chances to elect at least one leader of their choice in the Rajya Sabha.
