A local club located near Thalassery and controlled by Congress was vandalised on Saturday night. The party has alleged that the purported incident was carried out by the cadre members of the ruling CPI(M) party to avenge the defeat in the recent local body elections. The incident took place at the Priyadarshini Club in Eranjoli’s Mathumbhagam area.

According to Congress sources, cited by news agency PTI, the miscreants vandalised the club’s furniture, including chairs, and destroyed the party flags and posters kept inside the club premises. A portrait of Mahatma Gandhi was also found thrown inside the club. 

The Congress alleged that the resentment over its victory at the Mathumbhagam ward, which was a CPI(M) stronghold, was the main motive behind the attack. The club had functioned as the Congress election committee office during the recent local body polls.

Complaint Lodged Against Miscreants

In response to the vandalism, Congress party workers have complained to the local police and sought swift action against those who were responsible. Police said a case has been registered and an investigation is underway.

Who Won In Mathumbhagam Ward?

In the 2025 Kerala local body elections held in December, an independent candidate backed by the United Democratic Front (UDF), KJ Chacko, won the Mathumbhagam ward in the Changanassery Municipality. 

His victory was part of a larger "UDF wave" in the 2025 local body elections, where the UDF swept all six municipalities in the Kottayam district, including Changanassery. This win helped the UDF regain control of the Changanassery Municipality, which had previously seen significant influence from LDF-backed independents in the preceding term.

The incident also led to a shift in political power in the Mathumbhagam area, with control moving from the LDF to the UDF. In the larger context, the 2025 elections saw a broader statewide trend where the UDF won 54 out of 87 municipalities, significantly improving its 2020 performance.
