The results for Keralam Assembly election are due on May 4, where the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is seeking a third consecutive term. This will be the first time in Kerala's history that a government has been re-elected despite an anti-incumbency wave.

Expressing confidence in the achievements during his tenure, CM Pinarayi Vijayan said, "Our confidence is based on our vision and the fulfillment of our promises. We have integrated social welfare with infrastructure development. Kerala consistently ranks high in the Sustainable Development Goals and health indices."

Welfare Achievements vs Real Challenges

Keralam tops the NITI Aayog's SDG rankings, but independent studies paint a worrying picture. According to the Centre for Science and Environment, the state scores less than halfway in 20 of 107 indicators.

Weaknesses persist, particularly in areas such as gender equality, health, education, and economic development. The state lags significantly in female labor force participation, women's representation in managerial positions, and wage equality.

Despite this, Calicut University professor Sivadasan Mankada believes that the Pinarayi government's welfare schemes, especially the Life Mission housing project, pension schemes and investments in the health and education sectors, have weakened the anti-incumbency wave.

What Will Impact The Electoral Outcome?

Key factors influencing electoral outcomes include unemployment, migration, wage inequality and changing demographic structures.

With the counting of votes on May 4, Keralam will decide whether Pinarayi Vijayan's acclaimed welfare model will succeed once again or be given a farewell.

What Do Keralam Exit Polls Say?

Most exit polls show a close contest between the ruling LDF and the Congress-led UDF. Some exit polls give the UDF around 72 seats and the LDF 63, while a majority in the 140-member assembly requires 71 seats.

The Keralam Assembly Election saw a massive voter turnout of 87.2 per cent across 140 seats. In 2021, the state recorded a turnout of 77 per cent. The voter turnout in 2026 was the highest in over the last 20 years, making the contest even more interesting.
