Kerala Rains: The state is expected to have significant rainfall over the next five days, according to a warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Ten districts—Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur—are under a yellow alert.
Additionally, from November 4 to 8, the IMD warned about isolated heavy rain, thunder, and lightning.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in the districts of Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Idukki on Saturday due to heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning that battered portions of Kerala. Isolated places are predicted to witness extremely high rainfall.
In anticipation of significant rainfall ranging from 6 to 11 cm, the IMD first issued a yellow notice for several districts in Kerala. As the situation worsened, this was changed to an orange alert in Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Idukki, with isolated regions expected to have rainfall of 6 to 20 cm.
Eight additional districts, including Palakkad, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode, are still under a yellow alert.
A 58-year-old lady was killed by lightning in Haripad, Alappuzha district, as a result of the unfavourable weather. Water also swamped an Anganwadi facility and a number of houses in Kazhakoottam, which is close to the state capital.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has issued a warning to residents in landslide and mudslide-prone regions to stay alert and relocate to safer places if needed due to the continuous, intense rains. Official warnings have also urged those living close to rivers and dam catchment regions to move.
