Kochi Metro Update: In a major update for the commuters, both the Kochi Metro and Kochi Water Metro will extend operating hours on December 31 to manage the rush. The officials stated that the metro services will be available for the commuters till late at night to provide them convenience and ensure safety. The decision was taken after thousands of extra commuters utilised metro services in the last week of December in the past two years. The authority has suggested the residents to maximise the use of public transportation to avoid the rush. It further advised the commuters to follow the guidelines and plan their travel accordingly to avoid any inconveniences.
While providing details, the officials stated that the metro services will operate till 1 am on the night of December 31 on the Aluva-Tripunithura corridor. They further stated that the trains will run in both directions on New Year's Eve. “While the extension of service hours has been finalised, we are still deliberating on how the frequency of trains should be,” an official was quoted as saying by the New Indian Express.
The officials further stated that the water metro will also operate until 4 am on December 31, adding that the routes and frequency during the extended hours will be announced shortly. “We will announce that closer to the date,” the official emphasised. The authority stated that the Kochi metro has witnessed high ridership in December in the past two years due to the festivals and New Year.
The officials state that the metro services recorded a monthly ridership of over 32 lakh ridership in December 2024, adding that 1.3 lakh commuters travelled on the metro on New Year’s Eve in 2023. Earlier last month, the authority announced that several expansion plans will be announced in the upcoming months to boost the regional connectivity.
