The man, accused of raping and killing a woman trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata, has confessed to the crime, News 18 reported citing sources in the Kolkata Police. Authorities have also found a pornographic video on the mobile phone of the accused, Sanjay Roy.
Roy was a civic volunteer and had easy access to the hospital. Provision of civic volunteers was introduced in Bengal to assist the police. He was seen entering the hospital at 4 am. He was also seen interrogating the police in CCTV footage.
As per the sources cited by the media outlet, the accused's earphone was a crucial clue for the police to nab him, as he was seen wearing it while entering the hospital. However, CCTV footage shows that the earphone was not present when he came out. According to sources, the police recovered the earphone and linked it to the case, which was instrumental in solving the case.
Roy was arrested on Saturday and sent into 14-day police custody. He faces charges under Sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused appeared before Sealdah Court, which has remanded him to police custody until August 23.
A delegation of the National Medicos Organisation (NMO) West Bengal called on Guv CV Ananda Bose and expressed anguish over the incident. They demanded proper security for those on duty, especially the female medical practitioners during the night.
Guv Bose has asked the state government to take immediate action in the matter and submit a report. Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pledged to pursue the death penalty for the perpetrator in the case.
