Rituparna Sengupta Heckled: Veteran Bengali actor Rituparna Sengupta was forced to return from a protest site in Kolkata on Wednesday after a group of people demonstrating against the alleged rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital confronted her with chants of "Go Back" there.
The incident took place when the yesteryear megastar arrived at Shyambazar, one of the key protest venues, and attempted to address the protestors. As the sitaution escalated, she was whisked away to her vehicle by the police and her bodyguards, news agency PTI reported. The car then left the area.
In an interview with India Today later, Sengupta said she was pushed around and alleged that the members of the crowd were intoxicated. "They created chaos and pandemonium. They started pushing me and I tripped. They were drunk. There was a stampede-like situation," she said.
The incident came weeks after the legendary Bengali actress faced endless trolling for posting a video of her playing a conch shell to demand justice for the 31-year-old victim. Several social media users pointed out that Sengupta was simply pretending to blow the conch. They asserted that the sound was superimposed.
It was also pointed out that the conch used by Sengupta belonged to a kind never used for blowing. Notably, the actor was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in June this year in connection with the alleged ration distribution. The development gave rise to speculations of her being close to West Bengal's ruling TMC.
