RG Kar Medical College And Hospital Rape-Murder Case: Kolkata Police has clarified certain aspects of the case, stating that reports of them informing the family about a possible suicide are false. The family confirmed that no such call was made by Kolkata Police. Also, the police informed that they did not cremate the body, it was the family who conducted the cremation.
"Since points 1 & 2 concern Kolkata Police, we wish to clarify: 1. Reports of KP informing the family about a possible suicide are false. The family confirmed the call did not come from KP 2. KP didn’t cremate the body of the deceased. It was her family who cremated her," Kolkata Police wrote on X.

- The rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata has ignited a political clash between the West Bengal government and the opposition. The BJP has alleged that a TMC MP might have been involved in the heinous crime.
- "In this case, people from TMC are involved. Does Rahul Gandhi have the courage to speak that TMC is involved? What is the benefit of speaking half things...We BJP people dare to speak things and truth openly...We are here and we will speak the truth..." BJP leader Rahul Sinha told ANI.
- Meanwhile, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury led a protest march in response to the rape and murder incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Chowdhury condemned the horrific crime, stating, "The entire country has seen how a doctor has been raped and murdered in a government-run RG Kar Hospital. This incident is heart-wrenching for the people of West Bengal and the country. The doctors have been protesting against this. Everyone is demanding that the accused gets the maximum punishment...We do not have faith in the West Bengal Govt as the Police have tried to suppress the incident from the beginning. I want the state govt and police to support CBI in the investigation of this case..."

- Earlier today, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in his first response since the incident occurred, criticised the handling of the case and questioned the safety protocols in educational and medical institutions.
- Kolkata is in turmoil after the body of a woman doctor was found inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday. The 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor, who was on duty at the state-run hospital, was reportedly sexually assaulted and murdered on Thursday night. Officials discovered her semi-nude body in the seminar hall of the chest medicine department, with multiple injury marks.
- The post-mortem report of the trainee doctor revealed evidence of "genital torture." It indicated that the victim was strangled and then suffocated to death, with her thyroid cartilage fractured due to the strangulation. The report determined that the rape and murder occurred between 3 AM and 5 AM on August 9.
- Initially, police had suspected it to be a suicide, but later changed their version.
- Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested on Saturday in connection with the crime. Roy, who started his role as a civic volunteer in 2019, had reportedly been married at least four times and was known for his reputation as a "womanizer," according to police officers.
- The arrested man was also found to be addicted to pornography, with several such materials discovered on his mobile phone. "The pornography content in his mobile phone was quite disturbing and violent. We wonder about the state of his mind as watching such things is quite unnatural," a police officer said as quoted by news agency PTI.
